Occupational Therapy

Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop the skills needed for the many "occupations" of childhood such as play, self-help, self-care, learning, school performance, community skills, and socializing. Skilled OT intervention is designed to be fun and engaging for the child, while providing challenging therapeutic activities in an enriched sensory environment. The therapist works to develop the child’s underlying sensory and motor foundations necessary for skill development.  While your child is swinging, jumping on the trampoline, using the trapeze, or crawling through a tunnel, the therapist is guiding the child in order to support and enhance underlying vestibular processing, proprioceptive processing, balance, coordination and body awareness.  Functional activities such as shoe tying, zipping, buttoning, drawing, planning and organizing, or handwriting are worked into every session. The therapist also works to support the development of compensatory strategies, and provide environmental adaptations as needed for the child to be successful in participation of daily life activities.

Our occupational therapists provide evaluation and intervention in the following areas:
  • Fine motor skills
  • Handwriting
  • Motor Coordination
  • Motor Planning / Praxis
  • Play and social skills
  • Self-care
  • Dressing skills
  • Self-feeding
  • Sensory Processing / Sensory Integration
  • Strength and endurance
  • Visual motor and visual perceptual skills
  • Attention span and self-regulation abilities
